PhD Position on Arctic climatology, University of Bern

The climatology group of the Oeschger Centre for Climate Change Research and Institute of Geography, University of Bern http://www.geography.unibe.ch/content/forschungsgruppen/klimatologie/index_eng.html is looking for a PhD student in the area of Arctic climate change. The student will work in an international project related to decadal-scale climate and atmospheric circulation variability in the Arctic. The task will be to analyse atmospheric circulation and fluxes of heat and aerosols to the Arctic in climate model and reanalysis data.

The candidate should have a strong basis in climate physics (MSc in Atmospheric Physics, Geography, Geophysics, Environmental Sciences or similar), experience in handling large, gridded geophysical data sets (specifically climate model output or reanalyses) and proven skills in data processing (Fortran, MATLAB, IDL) and statistics (R or similar).

The successful candidate will participate in the PhD programme of the Graduate School Climate Sciences, University of Bern, Switzerland (www.oeschger.unibe.ch). Good English language skills are a prerequisite.

The position is available from June 1, 2012 (or later) and lasts 36 months.
